Meet the Vardanel Great Dane Clan ... well, some of them!
This site allows us to express how proud we are of our Great Danes and Bulldogs and at the same time it gives us a way to share with others, the knowledge and experience we have gained from living with Danes in particular, for some considerable time. We are happy to share our ideas and methods on the way we do things, with any one that may be interested.
It's all go at Vardanel cottage!
Out and about with the clan
Wall-to-wall Danes ...
and Bullies at Vardanel Cottage.
However, we believe that no one person has all the answers in caring for a Great Dane, especially when starting off with that valuable little bundle - your new Great Dane Puppy! We believe that several people will be willing to give you help and advice on how to miss some of the pit-falls you could encounter and that is what we are trying to do here.
It should be remembered that our ways are only some of many and any recommendations, suggestions and advice we give, are taken from our own beliefs and opinions, having been based on personal experience and the experience of others we have respect for. The content of this site is dedicated to the wellbeing of any and all Great Danes and their owners and in the belief that we give our Danes the very best we can.
ABOUT US ...
We are two people who share the belief that the Dane is truly Great. We have a healthy respect for this noble breed and as such endeavour to produce pups of quality, strength, good conformation and temperament. We make no distinction between Danes destined to be top of the breed or top of the popularity stakes in their pet homes. Any Dane that is healthy, happy and content is a winner in our books and any one that wishes to have a Dane in their family, deserves the best and that is what we strive to provide.
We live in our cottage with our Great Danes, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Bulldog and cats. Here you can see some of them sharing a cup of tea and a packet of biscuits with Anita!
We are breeders on a very small scale, who have a litter because we would like one and not because we have to have one. Our pups are home reared and very quickly become part of the clan for the short time they are with us.
Our story began at Crufts Dog Show, when we were manning the Discover Dogs booth with our respective Danes. We very soon found our common interest and before you know it, the Vardanel partnership was established. A total of some 40 years varied experience amalgamated by chance and now striving relentlessly forward in the never ending pursuit, of producing quality Great Danes of type and temperament for show and pet homes alike.
We are 'The team' - read on if you will.........
ANITA'S STORY:
My first venture into the world of black Great Danes was with two sisters Leah and Ebony. Leah was tall and elegant with a beautiful what we call ‘English’ type head. Ebony was shorter coupled than Leah, shorter in height and with a squarer head being more like as we say, the ‘German’ type. Both had good level toplines and sound movement: what a way to start!
Leah and Ebony gave us two striking daughters Bethan and Kiri, being similar in type to their Mums. These girls were very successful in the show ring, indeed, Bethan became top winning black bitch for 1994 and runner up in 1993 at the Great Dane League Finals. But perhaps more important to us, was their role in continuing the now established breeding programme.
Bethan produced: Natasha (Blue) who achieved the unique position of Top Winning Blue Great Dane Bitch for three consecutive years at the Great Dane League Finals (1996 1997 1998). She also had Briana (Black) and Dominic (Black).Kiri produced:
Georgia (Black)

GINA'S STORY:
I have been involved with breed showing since 1978 when I bought a West Highland White Terrier. I then became hooked on the glorious Newfoundland breed for about 17 years, but oohh! what a coat and an unquenchable thirst for water!
I was introduced to Gt. Danes at the end of the of the 1980’s, when I looked after my brother’s black bitch for 3 years his job having taken him abroad. I was once again hooked; short coat, gentle, amiable and NOT a big fan of water - perfect! When my brother returned for his Dane the void was soon filled when her breeder arranged for me to rescue a blue bitch she had originally homed on breeding terms but it hadn't worked out. Since then I have had the pleasure of living at home with some 20 senior Great Danes and numerous puppies.
My activities with Danes include breeding, Breed Showing, Agility Shows with clear round rosettes and judge’s specials won i.e. accurate but slow, (especially through the tunnels!). We enjoyed cycling (I rode the bike!) and hiking and I remember one magical day we walked to the top of Sca Fell Pike in the Lake District. For several years I played an active role in the now very popular event of ‘Discover Dogs’. It started at Cruft’s where I believe ‘our’ Stand was unique in providing a display. I designed and produced a simple display showing the attributes of this magnanimous breed. Over many years, my displays got bigger and more grand intending to depict the Great Dane with the highest esteem possible. Danes to me, are the perfect requisite for a fulfilling existence.
Georgia, our beautiful black bitch has the enviable position of being the result of joining the two ‘forces’ of the original girls, Leah and Ebony as well as uniting the two ‘forces’ of Anita and Gina. She is responsible for carrying on our well established black / blue breeding programme and she has given us an exciting start into the world of Harlequin Great Danes: what a girl!
